Winder, box, safe, case: what is the difference?
An automatic watch winds itself with the movement of the wrist. Left on a table, it eventually stops, and you have to reset the time the next time you wear it. Several solutions exist, meeting different needs: some keep the watch moving, others store or protect it.
The watch winder
It rotates the watch when it is not being worn, so that it stays ready. It is set according to your watch's specifications. See watch winders.
The watch box
It stores, separates and protects each watch in a compartment or on a cushion. See watch boxes and all watch displays.
The safe with winder
It combines closed storage and a built-in winder, for collections you want to keep safe. See watch safes.
The travel case
Compact, it carries one or several watches without scratching them. See watch cases.
Many collectors combine two solutions: a winder for the watches worn in rotation, a box for those that stay in storage. That is why the first step is to count.
How many slots do you need?
Enter the number of automatic watches, other watches (quartz or smartwatches) and those you plan to buy. Specify how many automatic watches you want to keep moving, and whether you would like a safe or a travel solution.
How many slots?
The tool calculates winder, storage and safe slots, then the matching models.
The calculation rule, in plain terms
- Winder slots = the automatic watches to keep moving, plus those to come.
- Storage slots (box, cushion, case) = the automatic watches that are not rotating, plus the other watches.
- If you want a safe, you need a slot for each watch, all categories combined.
The quiz: the right solution in a few questions
Prefer to be guided? The quiz asks how many automatic watches you own, what you want to do with them (keep them moving, store them, keep them safe, take them along) and in which room you will set them up.

A few questions, then the right solution, with the tool pre-filled.
Choosing your winder well
A winder is judged on a few points, all written on the product page. Take the time to read them.
- Number of slots: a model holds one, two, several watches or a whole collection. Start from the result of the tool above.
- Power supply: mains, USB or batteries, according to what the product page states.
- The settings: rotation direction and number of turns are set according to your watch. Check that the chosen model allows it.
- Noise: if the winder is going in a bedroom, look at what the product page states. When nothing is written, we do not assume anything.
- Material and finish: wood, leather, metal, glass. It is mostly a matter of taste and interior style.
To compare several models, keep your favorites in My selection.
Watch boxes and safes: store, separate, protect
Without a winder, a watch box keeps each piece safe from shocks and dust. Models differ in the number of compartments, the presence of a glass lid, the interior material (cushion, suede, flannel) and the closure.
In the bedroom or living room
A wooden or leather box matches the dresser or the desk, and the glass lid lets you see the collection without opening it. Our guide Watch box: how to choose one for your collection details the criteria.
To keep safe
A watch safe locks, and some include winders. Check the product page to know exactly what the model contains. All watch safes.
On the move
A watch roll or a carrying case protects the watch during the journey. The traveling with jewelry hub brings these solutions together.
Why does an automatic watch stop?
An automatic watch has no battery and no mandatory manual winding: it is the movement of the wrist that winds the spring. When it sits for several days, the power reserve runs out and the watch stops. You then have to reset the time, sometimes the date too, which quickly becomes tedious with several pieces.
The winder reproduces this movement: a small motor rotates the holder to which the watch is attached. Each watch has its own needs, which are listed in its manual. That is why we do not display any universal setting: the right setting is the one for your watch.
Where to put a winder or a box?
In the bedroom
This is where you put your watch down in the evening. If the winder has to stay on there, look at what the product page says about noise, and choose a model that specifies it. A model with a glass lid lets you see the collection without opening it.
In the office or living room
In a living space, the look of the piece matters: wood, leather, metal, glass. A glass-topped box becomes a decorative element as much as storage.
In a walk-in closet
A safe or a closed box protects from dust and light. Plan for an outlet or batteries if the model has a built-in winder, and check the power supply stated on the product page.
Precautions that avoid unpleasant surprises
- Count before you buy: a winder that is too small forces you to buy a second one.
- Check that the watch holder fits the size of your strap or case, according to the dimensions on the product page.
- Set the winder according to your watch's manual, not a general value.
- Keep your valuable watches in a closed space, separated from one another, to avoid scratches.

What budget to plan for?
Watch winders cover a wide price range, from simple models for one watch to safes for a collection. This page displays no prices: they are on each product page. Settle the number of slots first, then the material, and only then the budget: that way you avoid paying for unnecessary slots.

Frequently asked questions
Is a watch winder useful?
It is useful if you own automatic watches that you do not wear every day: it keeps them moving so that they stay ready. If your watches are worn regularly, a simple box is enough.
How many slots should I choose?
Use the “How many slots?” tool. It adds up your automatic watches, your other watches and those to come, then separates winder slots from storage slots.
How do I set the number of turns per day?
The number of turns depends on each watch: refer to its manual and check that the chosen winder offers that setting. We do not display any generic number.
Is a watch winder quiet?
It depends on the model. Read the product page: when the noise level is stated, it is written there. For a bedroom, favor models that specify it.
What warranty?
The legal guarantee applies. The return conditions (14 days) are detailed on the Returns page.
